Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to officially change the name of the state to ‘Kerala’. On 25 June 2024, the proposal to change the name of the state was passed unanimously in the Kerala Assembly for the second time. Earlier, a similar proposal was made in 2023. In Malayalam, the state is pronounced as ‘Kerala’. Therefore, the position of the state government is that the same change should be made in the official work and in the schedule of the constitution.

The bill will be sent to the state assembly

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the Kerala name change bill will now be sent to the state assembly for approval. He said that in the first Cabinet meeting held at the new Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) building, a resolution was passed to take all decisions in the interest of 1.4 billion people.

It was the first meeting of the Union Cabinet held in the ‘Seva Tirtha’ in the new Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) building. The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on 24 June 2024, requesting the Central Government to officially change the name of the state to ‘Keralalam’. The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed the resolution for the second time as the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes while reviewing the first proposal.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wanted the central government to change the name of the southern state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Kerallam’ in all languages ​​included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The Kerala Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a similar resolution in August 2023 and sent it to the central government, but the Home Ministry suggested some technical changes.

Earlier this year, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kerala state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that the official name of the state be changed from “Kerala” to “Kerallam”. He said that the name “Kerallam” is deeply connected with the Malayalam language and the cultural identity of the state.
