Modi government’s response to the war on Iran is a betrayal of India’s values, principles and interests: Congress
US and Israel strike on Iran: Congress has raised questions on PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel just before the war started on Iran. The country’s largest opposition party on Sunday alleged that the government’s response to the war on Iran is a betrayal of India’s values, principles and interests, as it claimed the country is paying a heavy price for both the substance and style of PM Modi’s foreign policy.

Taking a dig at PM Modi, Congress’ communications in-charge general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in an ex-post, ‘No matter how much the Prime Minister and his group show off, the reality is that India’s foreign policy has been completely exposed under the leadership of the self-styled world leader. The US President continues to maintain his closeness with Pakistan and is repeatedly praising the same person whose inflammatory statements had prepared the background for the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. The US has clearly supported Pakistan in its fight against Afghanistan.
The Congress MP further wrote, “As per the count so far, the US President has claimed more than a hundred times that he had intervened in stopping Operation Vermillion by threatening to increase tariffs on Indian exports on May 10, 2025. But the Prime Minister is completely silent on these claims of President Trump. The first announcement of stopping Operation Vermillion was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 10, 2025 at 5:37 pm. Was.’
Jairam Ramesh said, ‘On February 2, 2026, President Trump announced that at the request of the Prime Minister, the India-US trade agreement has been finalized and is coming into effect with immediate effect. It is clear that this was a desperate move by PM Modi. Eighteen days later, the US Supreme Court declared that President Trump’s tariff strategy, which was the foundation of the India-US trade agreement, is illegal and unconstitutional. This decision was widely expected, but PM Modi pressured President Trump to announce it first.
No matter how much the Prime Minister and his group pretend, the reality is that India’s foreign policy under the leadership of the self-proclaimed world leader has been completely exposed.

He said, ‘This trade agreement is now widely considered one-sided, with India making concrete promises to significantly liberalize imports, especially of agricultural products, while there has been no corresponding commitment from the US to increase imports from India in return. The US has also repeatedly asserted that India has agreed to stop buying oil from Russia, but the Modi government has not given any clear clarification on the promise made in this regard.
‘Prime Minister Modi visited Israel on 25-26 February 2026 at a time when the entire world was aware that a US-Israeli military attack on Iran aimed at regime change was imminent. The attack began only two days after PM Modi departed from Israel. His speech there in the Knesset was a shameful display of moral cowardice. The Modi government’s response to this imposed war on Iran is a betrayal of India’s values, principles, concerns and interests.

Ramesh wrote, ‘PM Modi had publicly given a clean chit to China on 19 June 2020. This shocking statement came at a time when twenty of our brave soldiers were martyred on the Ladakh border. This clean chit has seriously weakened our negotiating position and now we are being forced to normalize relations on China’s terms. The country is paying a heavy price for both the content and methods of Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy.
