Ursula Von Der Leyen Faces Backlash On Social Media For Calling An EU Security Meeting On Monday
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is facing criticism amid increasing military tensions between America, Israel and Iran in West Asia. He announced that the EU would call a special meeting to discuss the crisis on Monday (2 March), prompting criticism via memes on social media.
Many users on social media questioned why the EU is waiting until Monday (March 2) instead of calling a meeting immediately when the situation reached its peak over the weekend. Netizens sarcastically wrote, “While World War III is going live, Europe is saying—the war will start on Monday.”

“Given the ongoing situation in Iran, I am convening a special Security Council on Monday. For the security and stability of the region, it is vital that Iran does not escalate further misguided attacks on its partners in the region,” von der Leyen said in a tweet on Twitter.
Following the ongoing situation in Iran, I am convening a special Security College on Monday.
For regional security and stability, it is of the utmost importance that there is no further escalation through Iran’s unjustified attacks on partners in the region.

EU diplomatic activism
The European Union is actively trying to deal with the situation in West Asia. EU foreign policy chief Kaza Kalas described the situation on X as extremely dangerous. At the same time, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola appealed to all parties to exercise restraint.
However, the EU’s stance at the member state level did not appear to be completely united. France, Germany and the United Kingdom said in a joint statement that they were not involved in the attacks by the US and Israel. He also condemned Iran’s retaliatory actions and urged Tehran to adopt a “negotiation-based solution.”
Attitude of Britain and other countries
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom played no role in the attacks, but criticized Iran’s regime as unacceptable. He also noted that British aircraft were already in the air as part of the Regional Defense Coordination Operation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the US-Israeli action a unilateral military move and said it could make the global system more hostile. In contrast, Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said that Prague stands with its allies and that Iran’s nuclear ambitions and support for terrorism are a threat to Europe.
Europe’s collective stance is trying to strike a balance amid the growing conflict in West Asia. However, questions raised over the meeting’s timetable indicate that the pace of the European leadership’s response to the crisis is also now under public scrutiny. Global eyes are on the situation and the success of diplomatic efforts will become clear in the coming days.
