Unique and surprising story of Kharhari village of Jhansi

In India, as soon as the name of Holi is mentioned, colors, gulal and the sound of drums come to mind. but do you know that Jhansi Holi has not been celebrated in Kharhari village of the district for the last 150 years? Here neither colors fly, nor Holika Dahan takes place, nor is the beat of the drum heard. Let us know the complete story of this unique tradition.

150 years old tragic incident

It is said that about 150 years ago, a major accident took place in the village during Holika Dahan. The fire spread out of control to many houses. Within no time the happy festival turned into mourning. The villagers had to suffer huge losses. That fateful moment of that day is still alive on the lips of the elders.

Panchayat’s tough decision

Some time after the accident, a prominent family of the village died suddenly. People considered this a bad omen. Then the village panchayat sat and decided that now Holi will never be celebrated within the limits of the village. This decision was accepted by everyone and is being followed till today.

Holika Dahan does not happen

While Holika Dahan is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country, this tradition is completely stopped in Kharhari village. Here neither wood is collected nor any pyre is decorated. The month of Phagun passes here like any other ordinary day. No drums, no noise – just silence.

colors play outside the village

The villagers have no problem with the festival. If anyone feels like it, he can go outside the village limits and play with colours. But throwing colors or celebrating is prohibited inside the village. Everyone follows the traditions of their ancestors.

Attempt and fear of breaking tradition

A few years ago there was an attempt to break this custom. But during that time there was talk of spread of disease in the village. People considered it an inauspicious sign. Since then, the belief of the villagers became stronger that not celebrating Holi is right for the welfare of the village.

For this reason, even today Kharhari village is following the 150 year old tradition and is maintaining its own identity in the entire area.
