Judicial Council appeals to UNSC to immediately intervene to stop the escalating war
New Delhi/Ghaziabad. In an urgent appeal to the global community, the Judicial Council has formally written to the United Nations Security Council demanding immediate international intervention to stop the rapidly escalating military confrontation between the United States, Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Council letter emphasizes the devastating humanitarian, legal and geopolitical consequences of this conflict, saying that urgent action is necessary to prevent further loss of life and property and to safeguard the framework of international law.
This appeal of the Judicial Council has come at a very sensitive time. On 28 February 2026, the United States and Israel launched a series of military attacks on targets within the Islamic Republic of Iran, killing its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and military personnel, leading to a dramatic escalation of hostilities in the Middle East. Iran responded by launching missile attacks on Israeli territory and US forces deployed in the region, making the conflict even more dangerous and a serious threat to global security and stability.
In its letter to the Security Council, the Judicial Council stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, vigorous diplomatic efforts and a renewed commitment to international law. The Council expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation, increasing civilian casualties and the threat of conflict spilling over beyond the Middle East, which could undermine efforts to secure decades of peace and the rules-based international order.
‘We are witness to extremely serious and dangerous times,’ said Judicial Council Chairman Rajeev Agnihotri. ‘The world cannot stand by as a mute spectator while war engulfs entire regions. Our appeal to the UN Security Council is based on the belief that international law, human rights and peace must take priority over military aggression. “We demand immediate and decisive action to protect civilians, protect legal standards, and reestablish the path to dialogue.”
The Judicial Council’s intervention outlined several key legal and ethical points:
Violation of the UN Charter: The use of force by any state in express self-defense or without Security Council authorization may violate the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. The Judicial Council stressed that all parties must comply with their treaty obligations to avoid further deterioration of global legal standards.
Humanitarian Protection: Thousands of civilians are reported injured or dead, and the destruction of critical infrastructure is worsening the humanitarian crisis. The Council called for immediate action to ensure the protection of civilians and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance. Risk of broader conflict: This rising tension could draw regional and global powers into a major conflict, with unpredictable consequences for international peace and security.
In addition to the legal arguments, the Judicial Council’s letter also presents broad ethical grounds for intervention. ‘History will judge us on the decisions we take today,’ Judicial Council Secretary Sanjay Arora said We appeal to the Security Council to act with courage and determination, to defend international law and save humanity from the horrors of uncontrolled war.
