Maharashtra: Massive explosion in explosives factory; 17 killed, 18 injured
At least 17 people were killed, while 18 others were seriously injured in a massive blast in an explosive manufacturing unit in Raulgaon, Katol tehsil of Nagpur district of Maharashtra on Sunday (March 1) morning. According to the police, the explosion occurred at around 7 in the morning. After the incident, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately sent to the spot for relief and rescue operations.
The blast occurred at the factory of SBL Energy Limited, which specializes in manufacturing explosives and detonators for mining and industrial use. According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred in the detonator packing section. Eyewitnesses said that after the blast, a huge fireball and thick smoke spread throughout the complex. The intensity of the explosion was so high that debris scattered in the surrounding area.
As soon as the information was received, the administration swung into action and the injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals in Nagpur. The area has been sealed to prevent any further untoward incident. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police themselves have reached the spot and are monitoring the relief operations.
It is noteworthy that this is the second major explosion in the SBL Energy Limited plant in the last one year. In February 2025 also, 10 people lost their lives in the blast that took place here. The company had claimed to implement an AI-based security monitoring system in September 2025, but despite this, the repeated incident has raised serious questions on the security standards.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has described this accident as very sad and unfortunate. He said that a detailed investigation into the cause of the blast has been ordered and he is in constant touch with the local administration. The Chief Minister has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
