Iran blocks three Pakistani ships in the Strait of Hormuz
Islamabad. Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Iran on Sunday stopped three ships of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation from entering the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, these ships were carrying oil. The Pakistani ships stopped in the Strait of Hormuz are Karachi, Lahore and Khairpur. Sources said that the Lahore and Khairpur ships have been ordered to stop at the Fujairah port in the UAE, while the Karachi ship has been asked to anchor at the Gwadar port in Pakistan. All three ships had Pakistani crew on board.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that the Strait of Hormuz is closed to all ships, whether commercial or naval. The Strait of Hormuz is located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is the only sea route from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. It is approximately 104 miles (167 kilometers) long and ranges from 60 miles (96 kilometers) wide at its widest point to 24 miles (39 kilometers) at its narrowest point. It is the main route for oil exports from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates, which travel through the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea to global markets.
