Alireza Arafi becomes the new leader of Iran
After the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Leadership Council has appointed Alireza Arafi as the country’s new temporary Supreme Leader. Born in 1959 in Maybod city of Yazd province, Arafi is a Shia religious leader. He has been a member of the Guardian Council, a member of the Assembly of Experts, and head of the Basij.
Arafi will now form part of the temporary leadership council, which also includes judiciary chief Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Ezei and President Massoud Pezeshkian. This council will take charge of Iran until a new Supreme Leader is elected.
