Srinagar Muslims Protest Over Khamenei’s Death Mourning March With Black Flags In Lal Chowk
A joint US-Israel air strike led to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic regime occupying Iran, after which demonstrations were witnessed by the Muslim community in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on Sunday (March 1). In many parts of the city, people took to the streets to protest and carried out peace marches.
The demonstrations were mainly organized by the Shia community, although Sunni Muslims also joined them in many places. The protesters raised slogans against America and Israel while marching in Saida Kadal area and other parts. A large number of people gathered in Lal Chowk in the city center carrying black flags and mourned Khamenei’s death.
In view of the possibility of traffic being affected, the traffic police diverted vehicles on many routes. As a precautionary measure, the administration has made additional deployment of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jadibal area and other sensitive areas of Srinagar. Officials say the situation is being monitored and adequate arrangements have been made to maintain law and order.

Similar demonstrations were reported from Budgam district and other Shia dominated areas of the valley. According to local sources, the demonstrations remained peaceful, although security forces remained on alert.
The Shia community of Kashmir has religious affiliations with Iran. Many prominent leaders and scholars of the community have been coming to Iran to bring religious education. Experts believe that Iran’s religious rulers have held more importance for these communities than any other sentiment.
According to historians, Persian Sufi saint Mir Syed Ali Hamadani played an important role in the spread of Islam in Kashmir. He influenced the religious identity of the region through his preaching, writings, and Persian craft traditions. Khanqah-e-Maula located in Srinagar is still a symbol of it.
In view of the sensitive situation arising in the valley due to the impact of regional and international developments, the administration has appealed to the people to maintain peace. At present the situation is said to be under control, but security agencies are on alert to deal with any possible untoward incident.
