When will Holika be lit? Know the exact date, auspicious time and religious significance
Before Holi, there is confusion and debate among people across the country regarding the date of Holika Dahan. Some people are preparing to celebrate Holika Dahan on 2nd March, while some are considering 3rd March as the correct date. According to astrological calculations and classical rules, this time the Purnima Tithi is starting from the evening of 2nd March and will be present in the Pradosh period, due to which most of the astrologers are of the opinion that it will be auspicious and appropriate to perform Holika Dahan on 2nd March only.
This year, due to other astrological conjunctions like lunar eclipse and Bhadra, differences are also emerging regarding the date. Let us understand in detail what the scriptures, Pradosh Kaal and Bhadra rules say and ultimately on which day would it be best to perform Holika Dahan.
Time of Purnima Tithi and basis of Holika Dahan
The date of Phalgun Purnima in the year 2026 is as follows-
Purnima date start: March 2 at 05:56 pm
Purnima Tithi End: March 3 at 05:08 pm
There is a provision in the scriptures to perform Holika Dahan on the full moon day and especially during Pradosh Kaal (time after sunset). Since the Purnima Tithi will be present in Pradosh Kaal on March 2, most of the scholars are considering Holika Dahan on this day as the best.
according to astrologers
According to astrologers, this year it will be auspicious to perform Holika Dahan on March 2 only. In the scriptures, the special importance of burning Holika during Pradosh period has been mentioned. The time from 6:22 pm to 8:53 pm on March 2 is considered to be the best time for Holika Dahan.
Why is Holika Dahan controversial on March 3?
Purnima Tithi on March 3 will be towards the end and will not be available during Pradosh period. There will also be a lunar eclipse on that day, due to which most astrologers are not considering Holika Dahan on March 3 as appropriate.
Bhadra’s influence
According to some big and famous scholars, Manoj Tripathi says that not only the full moon but also the Bhadra and Pradosh periods have special importance in determining the date. According to him, March 2 will be the Purnima Tithi during Pradosh Kaal, but at that time there will also be influence of Bhadra, which is considered prohibited for auspicious works. Bhadra will not be there on March 3, but Purnima will not be available during Pradosh period. Some scholars consider Holika Dahan permissible on 3rd March also on the basis of morning full moon.
final conclusion
According to most astrologers and classical rules, the occurrence of Purnima Tithi in Pradosh Kaal is of paramount importance. Therefore, it would be most appropriate and auspicious to celebrate Holika Dahan on 2 March 2026. Dhulandi and Holi will be played with colors on 4th March.
