Japanese discount chain Don Don Donki to close 5-year-old outlet in eastern Singapore

Japanese discount chain Don Don Donki is set to shutter its outlet in Singapore’s Downtown East mall later this month after nearly five years in operation.

The company said in a Facebook post last Friday that the store will cease operations on March 15.

“We are truly grateful for all the love, support and late-night snack runs you’ve shared with us over the years,” it wrote. “From the bottom of our hearts, arigatou.”

Calling the move “not goodbye, it’s see you nearby,” the retailer pointed shoppers to its nearby locations, including Tampines 1 and Jewel Changi Airport.

According to AsiaOnethis appears to be the first reported closure of a full Don Don Donki outlet.

The retailer, known as Don Quijote in Japan, sells a wide range of products, from groceries and meals to household necessities, cosmetics and toys. It currently operates 17 outlets across Singapore, according to its website.

The chain made its local debut at Orchard Central in December 2017. The Downtown East store, which opened in April 2021, is its first in the eastern side of the city-state, per Mothership.

The closure announcement prompted residents elsewhere in Singapore to call for the chain to set up shop in their neighborhoods.

“The people who frequent NEX Singapore (shopping mall) are waiting for you, DON DON DONKI Singapore,” one Facebook user said, as quoted by The Straits Times.
