Hamas, or Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyyah, is a Sunni Islamic terrorist organization that leads the Gaza Strip. It was formed in 1988 by separating from the Muslim Brotherhood during the first intifada. Its target is the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state. Hamas wants to re-create the same Palestine that existed before the creation of Israel.

Iran had provided financial, arms and training support to Hamas through the IRGC since the 1990s. Although Iran stopped financial aid to Hamas in 2012 for not supporting Assad in the Syrian civil war, it resumed financial aid in 2017. According to senior Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, “Iran provides the greatest support to Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.”
