Protests in many parts of Kashmir for the second day, Lal Chowk sealed

Srinagar. Protests continued for the second day on Monday in many parts of Kashmir against the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. At some places, security forces used mild force to disperse the protesters. The iconic clock tower located at Lal Chowk has been sealed by placing barricades all around it.

According to officials, protests took place in Bemina, Gund Hasibhat and Jahangir Chowk areas of the city and Pulwama city of south Kashmir. Protestors gathered in these areas with a large Shia population and marched on the streets shouting anti-America and Israel slogans.

In some areas, security forces had to use mild force to disperse the protesters. As a precautionary measure for the safety of students and to maintain law and order, all educational institutions including private schools have been closed for two days. Along with this, university examinations have also been postponed.

A large number of police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed across the city to prevent the gathering of protesters. Large-scale demonstrations took place in Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama. The protesters were seen beating their chests while raising anti-America and Israel slogans.

Officials said the restrictions have been imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. He said that wires and barricades have been installed at important intersections entering the city.

Khamenei was killed in joint air strikes by America and Israel on Iran early Saturday. Iranian state media confirmed his death on Sunday. Iran is firing missiles at Israel and Arab countries in retaliation.
