Improving heart health: Effects of lockdown

Signs of improving heart health

During the lockdown in India, heart health among people above 50 years of age has improved, according to a health testing service provider. This change is mainly due to the reduction of processed and packaged foods.

The platform called Healthers reported that the incidence of high cholesterol has decreased by 22.3 percent during the lockdown. The data has been collected from more than 50,000 samples between the last quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2020.

The analysis divided the samples equally between men and women. Interestingly, there was a decline of 25.4 percent in men, while in women the figure was 17.2 percent.

This decline points to better heart health, made possible by lifestyle changes during the lockdown. Reduction in junk food consumption and healthy eating habits have contributed to this improvement.

According to Healthers, cholesterol is an essential fat that helps form hormones and healthy cells in the body. High cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

The study also found that there was a significant decline in cholesterol in people aged 50 and above, while the decline was less in the age groups of 20, 30 and 40.

Although lifestyle changes may be the main reason for this decline, health professionals believe that the winter season can also have an impact on cholesterol levels.

Deepak Sahni, CEO of Healthers, said that lifestyle changes play an important role in influencing health. The lockdown showed us how small changes can have a big impact on our health.

With increasing health awareness, people are now moving towards healthy options instead of unhealthy foods.

Smaller cities, such as Jaipur and Amritsar, have seen a greater decline in cholesterol than metros, possibly due to the lack of processed foods.
