Will India repeat history with a third trophy?

India-England semi-final: decisive match of T20 World Cup 2026

New Delhi. The T20 World Cup 2026 has entered its final stages, and all eyes are now focused on the India-England semi-final to be held at the Wankhede Stadium on March 5. Ahead of the final on March 8, this match will not only ensure a ‘ticket to the final’ but also brings a historic coincidence, having made India the first champion. Statistics confirm that whenever India has won over England in the semi-finals, it has lifted the trophy. Now for the fifth time, these two teams are facing each other in the semi-finals of the ICC tournament, which creates the possibility of history repeating itself again.

Equal competition, but coincidence with India

India and England have faced each other in the semi-finals four times in the history of ICC tournaments. Both the teams have achieved two wins each. Interestingly, on the two occasions when India defeated England, it won the title both those times. Thus, if the Indian team wins on March 5, it could be a chance to win the trophy for the third time. This is the third time after 1983 and 2024 when this particular equation is in favor of Team India.

1983: The story of going from ‘underdog’ to champion

The first semi-final match between India and England took place in the 1983 ODI World Cup. At that time India was being considered as ‘underdog’. India set a target of 213 runs in 60 overs against England. The bowlers, led by captain Kapil Dev, performed brilliantly, and India scored 217 runs for the loss of 4 wickets and won by 6 wickets. After this, India won the World Cup trophy for the first time by defeating West Indies in the final, which was an important victory that changed the future of Indian cricket.

1987: Gooch’s innings and the shattering of the Indian dream

Four years later, India and England met again in the semi-finals in the 1987 World Cup. This time England scored 254 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs. Graham Gooch put the team in a strong position by scoring 136 runs in 115 balls. In reply, the Indian team was reduced to 219 runs, in which even Mohammad Azharuddin’s 64 runs could not help the team win. This match was also Sunil Gavaskar’s last international match.

2022: Heavy defeat in Adelaide

The third clash took place in Adelaide in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Batting first, India scored 168 runs, in which Hardik Pandya (63) and Virat Kohli (50) played important roles. But England’s Jos Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*) made an unbeaten partnership of 170 runs and India lost by 10 wickets.

2024: Historic revenge after 41 years

India avenged their defeat by defeating England by 68 runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finals. India scored 171 runs for 7 wickets, while England collapsed for 103 runs in 16.4 overs. Rohit Sharma contributed 57 runs in 39 balls, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel took 3 wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah ensured the victory by taking 2 wickets. After this success, India won the title.

Fifth clash: Will there be a historical repeat again?

Now once again in 2026, India and England are face to face. The four matches are currently tied at 2-2, but the odds currently seem to be in favor of India. Now it will be interesting to see whether 41 years old history will repeat itself and the Indian team will be able to reach the trophy for the third time in their fifth encounter.
