Assam: Strictness in the birthplace of Shankardev! What is Avirbhav Kshetra where devotees will have to follow a special dress code to go?

Assam News: Assam The government is going to take a big decision to maintain the sanctity of the holy great man Shrimant Sankardev Avirbhav Kshetra. The government is considering banning different types of attire for the devotees coming here and is planning to make a dress code.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after offering prayers on the second day of the five-day program of Daul Mahotsav, said, “We have seen that people coming to Avirbhav area are coming wearing different types of clothes. People want to maintain its sanctity. Therefore, we have decided that devotees above 12 years of age will have to wear traditional attire to come to Batadrava.”

What did Himanta Biswa Sarma say?

Talking to the press, he told that this proposal is being actively considered and it will be implemented soon. The Chief Minister said, “The government process usually takes two to three days. It will be made mandatory as soon as the process is completed.”

The traditional ritual of “Faku Diya” was also performed at the police station on Tuesday. During this ritual, Faku is placed on the head of Gosain (Lord Krishna), which is a major ritual of this festival. After the completion of the redevelopment work of Batadrava Thana, which is the birthplace of Vaishnav saint great man Shrimant Sankardev, it was officially inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 29 December 2025.

What is Shrimant Shankardev Avirbhav Kshetra?

  • The incarnation area i.e. the birthplace of the great man Shrimant Sankardev is situated in Batdrava police station of Nagaon district of Assam. Now this holy place has been redeveloped and is known as ‘Mahapurusha Srimanta Shankardev Avirbhav Kshetra’.
  • This place is the birthplace of the great Vaishnav saint, poet and social reformer Srimanta Sankardev of the 15th-16th century.
  • It is considered a major center of Assamese Vaishnav tradition, culture and Neo-Vaishnavism, a large number of devotees and tourists reach here every year.
  • Recently in December 2025, this area has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs 227 crore.
  • Under this project, the entire complex has been equipped with modern facilities, while its religious and historical identity has been preserved.
  • A huge Namghar (prayer place) has been built in the Avirbhav area, where devotees offer collective prayers.
  • Along with this, a research center has also been established, where studies are conducted on the life and teachings of Srimanta Sankardev. An attractive musical fountain has also been built in the complex, which reflects his legacy.
  • The main attraction of this holy place is ‘Guru Asan’. It is considered the most sacred place for Vaishnav followers and devotees come here to visit with special devotion.
