BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari held a rally in Bhawanipur and appealed to remove Mamta government, accused of appeasement.
The heat of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal also seemed to dominate the colors of Holi. On the festival day, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari added to the political excitement by participating in a ‘Sanatan Hindu Samaj’ rally in Bhawanipur, considered the stronghold of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. During this, he directly attacked Mamata government and called upon Hindus to unite.
Accusations of ‘appeasement’ and ‘changing demography’
While addressing the rally, Suvendu Adhikari made sharp attacks on the Mamata Banerjee government. He said that this government wants to change the demography of Bengal for its vote bank. He also accused of misinterpretation of the word secularism and said that the name of the country is Hindustan, where all the communities have been living peacefully.
“On the day of the sacred ‘Dol Yatra’ festival, I appeal to my Hindu brothers and sisters to peacefully unite to oust this appeasement-loving Mamata Banerjee government, which wants to change the demography of Bengal by allowing infiltrators to settle here for its votebank.”- Suvendu Adhikari
His statement may further intensify the politics of polarization before the elections in the state.
Will Suvendu contest elections from Bhawanipur?
Suvendu Adhikari holding such a rally in the Chief Minister’s constituency is giving rise to many political speculations. There is talk in political circles that he can be a candidate against Mamata Banerjee from Bhawanipur in the upcoming assembly elections. Recently, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also opened a new office in this area, which has further strengthened these speculations.
TMC’s counterattack: ‘Dividing talks will not succeed’
Trinamool Congress (TMC) has also reacted sharply to these allegations of BJP. TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the BJP’s “communal and divisive rhetoric” will not succeed in consolidating Hindu votes during the festivals.
“In our state, people of all religions are celebrating ‘Dol Yatra’/Holi with equal enthusiasm. Today, Muslims are observing fast and also taking part in Holi celebrations. This is the real meaning of Hindustan, not BJP’s ‘one nation, one community state’,” Ghosh said. He accused BJP of using festivals for polarization.
