What was the test for?

The official test was scheduled to take place at the Bahrain International Circuit from February 28 to March 1. The main objective was to test wet track tire compounds for the 2026 season. The grip, durability and operating range of the tires were to be tested using a sprinkler system to create rain-like conditions on the track.

Major reasons for test cancellation

Reports of missile attacks and increased military activity around Bahrain’s capital, Manama, have made security in the region extremely sensitive. The situation is further complicated by the escalating conflict between the US and Iran. The test was called off as it was deemed unwise to risk the lives of the drivers and technical staff in such an uncertain environment. This has forced major companies like Mercedes and McLaren to reschedule their development at a critical time.

Impact on the season

This is also reflected in the first race of the season in Melbourne next week. Teams traveling through West Asian transit hubs such as Dubai and Qatar have had to make major changes to flight schedules due to airspace restrictions. Teams are now having to plan new and longer journeys to get their staff and expensive equipment in time for the Australian Grand Prix.

FIA’s role and security

The International Automobile Federation has made it clear that the safety and welfare of the athletes will be their top priority. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed hope that peace and stability will soon be established in this period of uncertainty. He has also appealed to give priority to communication and safety of citizens.
