New Delhi : The election excitement for the 126-member assembly of Assam has now reached its peak. The Election Commission can announce the dates for these elections to be held in March-April at any time. Meanwhile, Congress has created a stir in the opposition camp by releasing its first list of 42 candidates. Veteran MPs in this list. Former MLAs and youth have been given place. The party has fielded its strongest pieces in every region from Upper Assam to Barak Valley.

Names of many prominent leaders included in the list

Let us tell you that Congress has made the election contest interesting by including many prominent names in its first list. Deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi will now contest from Jorhat assembly seat. Abhijeet Paul has got the ticket from Silchar and Indranil Pegu has got the ticket from Majuli. Meera Borthakur Goswami will try her luck on Dispur seat. By making Ripun Bora its candidate from Barchalla, the party has given a clear message that it is fully prepared to return to power.

Special attention on reserved seats

The Central Election Committee of the party has tried its best to maintain social balance on the reserved seats. Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta (SC) and Ramen Singh Rabha from Boko-Chaygaon (SC) have been fielded in the election battle. Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC) and Bubul Das from Jagiroad (SC) will be in the fray. Utpal Baniya has been given a chance from Raha (SC) seat. Congress has also selected its candidates very carefully in the areas of Lower and Central Assam. Girish Barua from Bongaigaon and Satyabrata Kalita from Kamalpur will show their strength in the election field. Diganta Burman has been given the responsibility of Barkhetri and Ashok Kumar Sarma has been given the responsibility of Nalbari. The party has tried to strengthen its organizational strength at the local level by giving opportunity to faces like Binanda Kumar Saikia from Sipajhar and Tanjeel Hussain from Samaguri. Ratul Patuwari from Tihu and Noorul Hoda from Rupahihat are also prominent candidates.

At present, the ruling BJP has dominance in the Assam Assembly which has 64 MLAs. The power of NDA together with its allies is quite high. In the opposition, Congress has 26 MLAs and AIUDF has 15 MLAs. Left parties also have a small but significant presence in the House. This first list of Congress focuses on those 42 seats where it is most confident of its victory. The party hopes that early announcement of candidates will give them an edge in the campaign.

The way forward from the 2021 performance

In the 2021 elections, the BJP-led NDA had created a new record by returning to power for the second consecutive time by winning 75 seats. Then Congress led Mahajot had secured 50 seats. Which was a much better performance than 2016. This time the aim of Congress is to reach the threshold of power by maintaining that momentum.
