Tehran, March 3. Strong earthquake tremors have been felt in Gerash, Iran amid the joint air strike of America and Israel. The US Department of Geology (USGS) has given this information. According to the USGS, its intensity was measured at 4.3 on the Richter scale and the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. At present there is no information about any casualty or major damage. The local administration is keeping an eye on the situation and the situation is being assessed.

This earthquake has come at a time when tension in the region is at its peak due to America and Israel’s attack on Iran. The attacks included air and missile attacks on Iranian military and strategic targets, prompting retaliation, disruption of air traffic and heightened security concerns across the Middle East. According to preliminary assessment, the earthquake is not believed to have any direct connection with the ongoing military activities.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world

Gerash is a city in the Fars province of Iran and falls in the Larestan region in southern Iran. Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world because the Zagros Fold Thrust Belt is formed by the collision of the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This 1,600 km long mountain range extends across Iran, Iraq and Türkiye and was formed by the northward movement of the Arabian Plate. Gerash is part of this belt. In this respect, an earthquake of 4 to 5 magnitude in the area can be considered quite serious.

The 1990 earthquake in Iran proved devastating. The ‘Rudbar earthquake’ that occurred in Manzil and Rudbar of Iran on the intervening night of June 20-21, 1990, caused huge devastation. This is one of those powerful earthquakes in history, which caused massive loss of life and property. Due to the collision of ‘Arabian Plate’ and ‘Eurasian Plates’, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude occurred at 12.30 in the night and about fifty thousand people lost their lives. An area of 20 thousand square miles in Zanjan and Gilan provinces was completely destroyed.
