T20 World Cup semi-finals: Spinners decisive even on Eden’s flat pitch, Santner

The first semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2026 will be played between New Zealand and South Africa on March 4 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, while taking stock of the pitch before the match, said that it looks favorable for batting, but the role of spin bowlers will be important.

The New Zealand team, which reached Kolkata directly after the victory against Sri Lanka, practiced brilliantly in the limited time. Santner admitted that one more day’s rest would have been good, but the players are fully prepared. The conditions in Colombo and Kolkata are different, so quick adaptation is necessary.

Many members of the team have gained experience of Indian conditions from IPL and other series. Yet Santner made it clear that adapting to tactics on match day is paramount. South Africa’s brilliant performance will present a tough challenge.

Batsmen will benefit from the pitch being flat, but spinners will get grip. For fast bowlers, accurate line is necessary, while the big boundaries of the field will affect the strategy. This match to be played on the occasion of Holi will be exciting. New Zealand desperate to add color to victory.

The team full of confidence is ready to take a strong step in the race for the finals.
