Government’s SIM-Binding rule implemented: Now WhatsApp and Telegram will not work in the old way, know the complete change
New Delhi. The central government has implemented major technical changes regarding the use of messaging platforms from March 1. After the new SIM-Binding rule implemented under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), now WhatsApp and Telegram will work smoothly only in the phone which has an active SIM card from which the account was created.
The government claims that this step has been taken to stop cyber fraud and fraud through fake SIMs. However, this change has also brought inconvenience for a large number of users.
What is the new SIM-binding rule?
According to the new rules:
The messaging app account will now be linked to the active SIM of the respective mobile number.
If that SIM card is not present in the phone, the app may stop working.
In such a situation, re-verification will be mandatory.
Earlier, users could run the app by removing the SIM after verification and the login remained intact on Web/Desktop, but now this will not be possible.
Which users will face the most problems?
The new rules will have the biggest impact on:
Those who used the app on two phones or tablets from the same number.
Those who regularly use WhatsApp Web or Telegram Web.
Those who often change the SIM card or insert it in another device.
Web and desktop versions can now log out automatically every six hours. For re-login, it will be mandatory to insert the same original SIM in the same phone.
Impact on those traveling abroad also
If a user goes abroad and installs a local SIM, the account linked to the original number may have to be re-verified.
Using the app on a Wi-Fi-only tablet or secondary device may be difficult.
Why did the government take this decision?
According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in many cases, fraudsters were committing fraud and cyber crimes by keeping active WhatsApp accounts made with closed or fake SIMs.
From SIM-Binding System:
Accounts linked to fake or inactive SIMs will be automatically deactivated.
It will be harder than ever to misuse any number.
Cyber security system will be strengthened.
What message for users?
Although this step is considered important from security point of view, but in everyday use, users may have to go through extra caution and repeated verification process.
Tech experts believe that in the coming times, users will have to change their digital habits, especially those who use multi-devices.
