Michael Vaughan Backs England’s Spin Edge to Outclass India
The former captain Michael Vaughan has expressed confidence in England’s chances against India during the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals, pointing out their strong spin attack.
England are set to face India in the knockout stages of the ICC event on March 05 after topping the group in the Super 8s points table. Despite being the table topper, England didn’t storm into the semifinal as they were behind the game against Pakistan and New Zealand, but made a bad win.
During the group stages, they lost their game against the West Indies and almost suffered a defeat against Nepal.
However, Michael Vaughan feels that England has a superior spin attack, and it gives them an edge in a contest.
Speaking on a podcast, Michael Vaughan said, “England seem to have found a way of winning. England has a better spin attack than India. (Varun) Chakravarthy has been at; Dawson, Rashid and Will Jacks have been the best trio in the tournament in terms of spin.”
Harry Brook’s side have not been dominant in the group stage despite winning three of their four matches to progress.
However, since entering Super 8s stages, England have stitched together five successive wins, edging out tight contests against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, India has been unbeaten in the group stages and secured two wins out of three games.
Despite a defeat against South Africa, which hung in the balance, the Men in Blues responded strongly in must-win games against Zimbabwe andthe West Indies to book their place in the semi-finals, yet questions remain over certain aspects of their game.
England’s trio Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks have been most effective in the tournament. Rashid picked 11 wickets in seven matches at an economy of 7.83, while Liam Dawson picked 10-wickets in seven games at an economy of 7.30, while Will Jacks chipped in with seven wickets across seven matches.
“Dawson, Rashid and Will Jacks have been the best trio in the tournament in terms of spin,” Vaughan said.
On the other hand, India’s Varun Chakravarthy has 12 wickets in seven games at an economy of 7.66, but his vulnerability has revealed in high-pressure games.
Meanwhile, vice-captain Axar Patel has claimed seven wickets in five matches at an economy of 7.52 and remained a dependable option in the middle overs. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav, who has a strong record against England, has just bowled three overs in the tournament and is unlikely to play in the semifinals.
Vaughan also impressed on England’s fielding abilities, saying, “England’s fielding has been absolutely exceptional. They look really alert. England’s running between the wickets has been exceptional. The small percentage of things you can control, England seems to be doing very well.”
On the other hand, India has been struggling with the department as they have dropped 13 catches in the tournament.
However, India remains a favourite with a packed batting line-up. Michael Vaughan believes England’s ability to win tight games, their spin strength and superior fielding will make a difference.
“I just have a funny feeling England can get the job done in Mumbai,” he said.
With Indian fans set to flood Wankhede Stadium for the knockout clash, the venue is set to witness one of the biggest clashes in T20 World Cup history.
