Sale of NCERT’s controversial Class 8 book stopped

NCERT has stopped the sale of Class 8 Social Science book Exploring Society India and Beyond (Part 2) due to the controversial chapter and recalled 31 out of 38 copies purchased. The Supreme Court banned publication, reprinting and digital distribution. Students and parents got relief and NCERT may release revised material in future.

The Supreme Court imposed a complete ban on publication, digital distribution and reprinting. A total of 31 out of 38 purchased copies have been recalled. This action was taken to ensure the safety of students and parents and transparency in education. NCERT may release a revised version in future.

Book withdrawal and controversy

Objections were raised regarding the chapter related to judiciary in the Class 8 Social Science book Exploring Society India and Beyond (Part 2). After this controversy, the Supreme Court imposed a complete ban on publication, reprinting and digital distribution. NCERT has immediately stopped the sale and recalled 31 out of 38 purchased copies and the return process for the remaining is underway.

Cause of dispute and court order

The book included a section titled Corruption in the Judiciary, on which Supreme Court Chief Justice D.K. Suryakant expressed strong displeasure. The court ordered the schools and NCERT director to immediately seize and seal all the copies and submit its report to the court.

Student and Parent Relief

Students and parents heaved a sigh of relief after the sale was stopped and the copies were taken back. NCERT has urged buyers to immediately remove controversial content if it is shared on social media or digital platforms.

Revised content and further planning

NCERT may publish new revised material in future after review. With this, students will not get confused in the curriculum and quality will be maintained in the education system.
