India on alert amid Middle East tension, increased surveillance in Persian Gulf

In view of the ongoing tension and war-like situation in the Middle East, the Indian government has taken a big step. Surveillance has been increased for the safety of Indian ships and sailors in the Persian Gulf and surrounding maritime areas. Along with this, a Quick Response Team (QRT) has also been formed to ensure the safety of the sailors. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. The current security situation was reviewed in detail in the meeting. The minister said that the government is continuously monitoring the situation and all necessary steps have been taken for the safety of Indian seafarers and maritime assets. He assured that if there is any new change in the situation, immediate action will be taken.

24×7 monitoring, real time tracking started

The ministry has started real time monitoring of Indian flagged ships. 24 hour monitoring is being done through DGCom Centre. New reporting guidelines have also been issued for shipowners and managers to enable prompt response to any emergency.

Danger increased in these areas

Incidents of missiles, drones and electronic interference have increased in recent times in areas like the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman. This is the reason why India has fully activated the surveillance and security system as a precaution. Continuous coordination has been maintained between the Indian Navy, Ministry of External Affairs, Maritime Rescue Center and Indian Embassies abroad. Complete preparations have been made to provide operational, diplomatic and humanitarian assistance if needed. The Minister reiterated that the Government of India is vigilant at all levels to protect its seafarers and maritime interests and stands firmly with its people in these difficult times.
