Is Pakistan going to enter the Iran-Israel war? SMDA agreement with Saudi increases suspense

Iran War News: iran It is continuously attacking the Gulf countries and now the question is arising whether Pakistan will honor the agreement which it had made with Saudi Arabia in September 2025. According to this agreement, if there is an attack on either of them, it will be considered an attack on both.

This agreement is called Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA). Under this, both the countries can jointly launch a retaliatory attack. However, it has not been clearly stated whether this could also include the use of nuclear weapons or not.

What did Pakistan’s foreign minister say?

From the statement of Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, it can be guessed what Pakistan is thinking in this matter. During a conversation with the Foreign Minister of Iran, he said that Saudi Arabia should not be attacked because there is a defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. According to the Financial Times, this was the first time that Pakistan has openly mentioned this agreement.

Will Pakistan join this war?

It is believed that after Israel’s air attacks on Doha and Qatar in September 2025, Saudi Arabia started looking for new partners for its security. This also raised the question whether America would now be able to ensure the security of the Gulf countries like before or not. However, many analysts believe that the possibility of Pakistan directly getting involved in the Middle East war is less. But at the political and diplomatic level it can definitely support Saudi Arabia, especially because of the SMDA agreement.

At present the Foreign Minister of Pakistan has only given a warning. He has not clearly said that Pakistan will go to war for Saudi Arabia.

Did Pakistan give genuine security to Saudi?

It is said that Pakistan has brought Saudi under the umbrella of Pramanu security. However, Pakistan has not officially said that it has given nuclear security to Saudi Arabia.

However, this agreement can be considered against the spirit of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Both these international agreements do not recognize nuclear weapons as legitimate in any security framework.

Nevertheless, after the current situation and the statements of the leaders, the question has started to arise whether for the first time Pakistan has given assurance of nuclear security to a non-nuclear ally country. If this is so, then this could create a new and dangerous example in the world.

A report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has cited analysts from London-based think tank Chatham House. He says that this agreement, even though there is no direct mention of nuclear weapons in it, but it can set an example of extended deterrence i.e. providing security to another country on the part of nuclear power Pakistan. This may give rise to new concerns regarding the international nuclear system.
