According to the report, the number of app deletions increased by almost 295% on a day-to-day basis. On the other hand, the popularity of Claude chatbot of OpenAI’s rival company Anthropic started increasing rapidly. Claude’s downloads increased by about 51% and it reached the number-1 position on the US Apple App Store.
Sam Altman admitted his mistake
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman later admitted that the company should have taken a little more time before partnering with the Pentagon. He said the deal came at a time when Anthropic’s contract had expired, prompting OpenAI to step in immediately. Altman posted on the social media platform X that the company has now updated its contract with the Pentagon and made its principles more clear.

An interesting twist in the matter came when famous pop star Katy Perry also gave her reaction. He shared a screenshot of Claude on the X platform and posted a heart emoji. This post clearly indicated that she was supporting Anthropic’s decision in which the company did not accept some of the Pentagon’s demands.

OpenAI made major changes
OpenAI released an internal memo as the controversy escalated. This memo made it clear that the company’s AI system cannot be used for large-scale domestic surveillance of American citizens. This ban is said to be based on laws like the Fourth Amendment of the National Security Act 1947 and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act 1978 (FISA).
