Renault Bridger, Jimny’s rival?

Renault is set to unveil a new sub-compact SUV concept on March 10, 2026, in Guyancourt, France. The concept has been named ‘Bridger’ and will spawn an SUV that will be positioned below the Duster and above the Kiger in the carmaker’s India lineup. Details of the actual nature of this product remains limited. Early renders and first-look pictures put out by Renault point to the production form being a possible Maruti Jimny rival. Boxy shape, bold lines and an upright stance- all back this claim well. So, could this really be a Jimny rival? Let’s try to speculate…

Renault Bridger Will Spawn A ‘Mini Duster’

Renault has confirmed that the production form of Bridger concept will be a sub-four metre SUV, designed specifically for India. It will reportedly be sold only in markets like India, Africa and Middle East, at least initially. Renault is expected to turn India into the export hub for this product.

It will target urban buyers and will become the ‘Mini Duster’ that the company had hinted at previously. The first teaser images of the concept surfaced just yesterday (March 4, 2026). It showed a boxy, upright, rugged silhouette, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and a front end that borrows some of its cues from the Duster.

Renault calls the Bridger an urban SUV of ‘new proportions’ referring to the sub-four metre placing, but also adds that there will be no compromise in cabin room due to the same. The name, the company further explains, reflects the assertive nature of its design.

While that could be a marketing narrative, it is clear that the concept will look different from most models that are currently on sale in the B segment. The design cues let out by the first images, especially the tailgate-mounted spare wheel have made many including us, speculate that it could be a Jimny rival in the making.

Why We Think The Bridger Can Be A Jimny Rival

Take a look at the rendering released by Car Motorcycle. The artist has visualised a possible rear three-quarter view of the Bridger based on the available teaser images. The SUV looks bold and imposing in it, and frankly, has more visual appeal than the Jimny that’s currently on sale.

The Jimny is quite popular in India. Despite being a niche product, it sold over 600 units on an average in the past six months. It enjoys a cult following here. Many love its compact proportions and rugged, utilitarian design. Interestingly, the Bridger’s render also encompasses the same qualities- compact size, bold lines, clean surfaces, an upright stance and a rugged, off-road-capable design. The design direction makes us believe it could rival the Jimny here.

The Bridger-based SUV will measure less than four metres-in net length, thus qualifying for duty cuts. It will belong to the B2 segment. The Jimny is also a sub-four-metre offering, measuring 3,985mm in total length. Both SUVs, from available data, will have similar footprints.

The Jimny is now priced in the Ra 12.3- Rs 14.4 lakh price bracket. The sub-compact SUV based on the Bridger concept could also sit in the same ballpark with its prices, even though it is too early to give an affirmative remark on the same.

We lack clarity on the powertrain details that are to be expected on this SUV. A report by Autocar UK speculates that Renault might consider giving it the new Duster’s mild and full hybrid engines- the 1.3L turbo-petrol and 1.8L strong hybrid. This, however, sounds too ambitious for a B segment SUV.

The 1.3L turbocharged petrol would make it more powerful than the Jimny that comes with a rather modest 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine which makes 103hp and 134Nm. The better fit would be the 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine found on the base-spec Duster. On the Duster, it makes 98hp and 180Nm. A similar tune will feel great on the mini-Duster.

Just design and a strong engine won’t make the Bridger-based SUV a potent Jimny rival. The Maruti SUV’s greatest strength is its oldschool ladder-frame platform and rugged underpinnings. The mini-Duster will, however, have a monocoque construction. The Jimny’s biggest strength is its rugged 4×4 hardware with a low range transfer case and a 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs. It is unlikely that the Renault SUV would get a similar setup.

The French carmaker can, however, explore the possibility of giving it All Wheel Drive based on an electric rear axle, instead. In many global markets, some Dacia models come with similar setups. In this case, the lower variants will continue to feature a front-wheel drive layout. The introduction of a rear e-axle may present cost-related challenges to the manufacturer.

Why The Bridger-SUV Won’t Likely Be A Jimny Rival

Yes, there is a decent demand for small lifestyle SUVs. Tapping into it, however, can be tricky. Most buyers in this segment seek strong off-road abilities, which a monocoque offering can barely provide.

The Jimny is able to cater to this demand due to its rugged genes and oldschool engineering that feels nearly unbeatable on terrains. Renault is very unlikely to be building something similar, at least not this time. Even if they do, they won’t be able to chase volumes beyond a certain extent, as the Jimny segment is relatively small.

The Bridger-based SUV will most likely be a B segment SUV that looks different from its own rivals, and has a design that has more character and aligns better with the traditional SUV silhouette. A more ‘SUV-ish’ alternative to the likes of a Maruti Brezza or a Tata Nexon.

In the best case, the AWD would make it capable of doing mild and intermediate off-roading. This only remains a distant possibility, as the company has already clarified that this SUV is targeted at the urban buyer. Time remains before we learn the actual direction that Renault would take with this product.

What More To Expect On March 10th?

Renault Group CEO Francois Provost and senior management will reveal the carmaker’s new strategic plan, ‘futuREady’ at Guyancourt next week. The Bridger’s global debut/ showcasing will be an important part of this event. The event, as such, will discuss Renault’s plan to grow business in Europe and high-growth international markets. India is, one of the most important markets for company, outside of Europe.
