T20 World Cup 2026: Charter flight arranged for West Indies team to return home amidst Middle East tensions
After days of anxious wait, the West Indies team is set to return home sooner than later.
The West Indies team lost its last Super Eight match to India at the Eden Gardens here on March 1 resulting in its eventual exit from the T20 World Cup. But it remained stranded here due to flight cancellations owing to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
It is reliably learnt that the team will take a charter flight to fly back home.
According to sources in the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday, the Caribbeans will board a direct flight to Antigua. Details of the date and time of the flight are expected to be known in 24 hours. Since it is a 15-hour flight covering different sectors, clearances for the aircraft need to be taken for two days.
Earlier in the day, West Indies coach Daren Sammy took to social media seeking clarity on his team’s departure. “I just wanna go home,” said Sammy on ‘X’ before adding, “At least an update, tell us something. Today tmw, next week. It’s been 5 days.”
He thanked authorities concerned after getting an update on the team’s travel.
