BJP played big in Maharashtra politics, did not field candidates against Sharad Pawar, will reach Rajya Sabha unopposed

Mumbai: Big games often take place in the country’s politics. Overnight power shifts from one camp to another. There are many stories of this in Maharashtra. However, this time something different is going to happen in the Rajya Sabha elections. Only seven candidates have filed nominations for seven seats. Accordingly, many stalwarts of the ruling coalition, including 85-year-old Sharad Pawar, have confirmed their place in the Upper House of Parliament without contesting any election.

Elections for seven Rajya Sabha seats were to be held in Maharashtra on March 16. Thursday, March 5 was the last day for filing nomination papers at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai. Usually, additional candidates are fielded due to fear of cross-voting and political manipulation, but this time nothing like this happened. Against 7 seats, only 7 leaders have filed their nomination papers. When there are no more candidates than seats, there is no need for voting in elections. In such a situation, the election of all seven candidates unopposed has become just a formality.

Supriya Sule filled the form

There is only one candidate in the fray from the opposition alliance Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA), and that is Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar himself. Pawar, 85, could not be personally present at the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Thursday due to his ill health. In his absence, his daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule filed nomination papers on his behalf. Despite health reasons, Pawar’s political stature is taking him to the Rajya Sabha once again unopposed.

On the other hand, the ruling Mahayuti alliance has filed nominations for all the 6 seats of its quota. The most prominent names among them are Union Minister and Republican Party of India (A) chief Ramdas Athawale and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vinod Tawde. Both these veterans are also ready to climb the stairs of Rajya Sabha without any election tension.
