A woman has been arrested in an area on the outskirts of Delhi, accused of feeding her family members with sleeping pills mixed in their food, stealing cash from them and then absconding. Police said on Tuesday that the incident took place on the same day when the accused woman was starting work as a caretaker at the house.

According to the police, this case dates back to February 26, when information about theft of Rs 30,000 to 40,000 from a residence in Paschim Vihar was received through PCR call. The family had hired the woman from an agency in Nihal Vihar to take care of their ailing 59-year-old member. A senior police officer said that the woman carried out the theft plan after helping her with the household work on the very first day. He prepared and served lunch to the family members, after eating which all of them fainted under suspicious circumstances.

Registered FIR and started investigation

It is being told that, when the family became suspicious of suspicious circumstances, they immediately informed the police. Mobile Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to investigate the case and evidence was seized and samples of suspicious food were seized. The victims were treated at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on February 27 in connection with the incident and investigation was initiated.

Rs 20,000 cash recovered

The police traced the accused woman to Bareilly through technical surveillance. On February 27, a raid was conducted there and he was arrested. During interrogation, the woman allegedly admitted that she had stolen six sleeping pills from her previous workplace in Noida. She explains that the pills were meant for the elderly woman she looked after. The woman claimed that she ground these pills and mixed them in the family’s food with the intention of stealing. However, a minor girl in the family did not take the food, and the elderly woman became suspicious and did not allow the accused to reach the cupboard, thereby limiting the impact of the theft. Police said that Rs 20,000 in cash has been recovered at the behest of the accused. The investigation of the case is still going on.
