World News: A big revelation has come to light in the environment of increasing tension between America, Israel and Iran. A Pakistani citizen has claimed in a US court that he was asked by Iranian intelligence agents to take part in a plot to assassinate top US leaders. This matter has come to light at a time when military tension is continuously increasing in West Asia and its impact on global politics is visible.

Pakistani citizen Asif Merchant, who appeared in the Federal Courtroom in Brooklyn, made many shocking claims while declaring himself innocent. He says that he did not knowingly carry out any murder conspiracy and was looking for a way out of this plan from the beginning. However, American investigative agencies are looking at this matter very seriously and if the allegations are proved, he may have to face severe punishment.

Allegation of conspiracy to assassinate American leaders

According to the report, Asif Merchant is accused of being asked by people associated with the Iranian intelligence network to take part in the plan to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, former President Joe Biden and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

According to the New York Post report, Asif Merchant was arrested in August 2024. Investigating agencies say that he had offered to pay about 5 thousand dollars i.e. about Rs 4.6 lakh to two people to carry out this murder plan. But the people he thought were contract killers were actually FBI agents who were already monitoring the case.

After this revelation, American security agencies started investigating this entire matter in depth. Officials believe that this conspiracy may have been hatched with the aim of influencing the country’s politics and security system during the American elections.

Claim of receiving threats to the family

While giving his clarification in the court, Asif Merchant said that he was forced to do this work. He claims that his family was receiving serious threats and that is why he decided to obey the Iranian agents.

According to Asif, one of his wives and three children live in Pakistan while his other wife and daughter live in Iran. He told the court that an Iranian handler had threatened to harm his wife and daughter. Because of this he came under pressure and pretended to obey them.

She also told that once her handler reached her house without any notice and during a conversation tried to scare her by showing a gun. After this incident he realized that the safety of his family was in danger.

Story of coming in contact with Iranian handler

Asif Merchant also told in the court how he met Iranian agents. According to him, he himself came in contact with Iranian agents in the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023. At that time he helped them in money laundering to avoid US sanctions.

Asif told that earlier he used to work in a bank and later he started banana export business. But this business could not run for long and was later closed.

He says that in April 2024, an Iranian handler contacted him and instructed him to go to America. At that time he was also told that after reaching there he might have to kill someone. Later he was told that possible targets could include Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Nikki Haley.

Claim of conspiracy related to US elections

This entire matter is being told about the time when the 2024 presidential elections were about to be held in America. There was believed to be a tough contest between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in that election. Nikki Haley was also initially a contender for the post of President, although later she dropped out of the election race.

Asif Merchant has revealed the name of his Iranian contact as Mehrdad Yousuf. According to him, Yusuf is associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He claimed that Yusuf had instructed him to plan the murder and obtain some confidential documents.

The investigating agencies are now also investigating the claim whether any organized network was actually working behind this conspiracy.

Claim of not knowingly carrying out the conspiracy

Asif Merchant told the court that he deliberately did not complete this conspiracy. He says that he already had an inkling that he would soon be caught. For this reason he had offered a very small amount for the murder.

According to him, he offered an amount of around Rs 4.6 lakh because he knew that no person would be willing to commit such a dangerous crime for such a small amount.

Asif claims that he wanted to tell the American government about this entire plan. He hoped that when this conspiracy came to light, he would be able to save himself and perhaps he could get permission to live in America i.e. green card.

Punishment can be up to life imprisonment

Currently this case is under hearing in the American court. The prosecution is now preparing to cross-examine Asif Merchant. If the charges against him are proved in the court, he may be sentenced to life imprisonment.

During the investigation, a video was also presented in the court which is said to be from June 2024. This video is of a motel in the Queens area of New York which was recorded by FBI agents. In the video, Asif Merchant is seen discussing a plan to assassinate a Republican leader. Investigators believe that he was probably talking about Donald Trump.
