Crown Princess’s son faces explosive rape trial
The Norwegian monarchy is facing its darkest hour as Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, stands trial in a case that has sent shockwaves through Europe.
On February 3, 2026, the trial officially began in Oslo, with Høiby facing a staggering 38 counts, including four counts of rape, physical assault, and drug offenses. The proceedings have pulled back the curtain on a world of royal afterparties and alleged drug-fueled misconduct.
While Høiby is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, he holds no royal title or official duties. However, the nature of the allegations has brought unprecedented scrutiny to the palace.
Prosecutors claim Høiby sexually assaulted a woman at a party held at Skaugum, the official royal residence. The victim testified that while she had brief consensual contact with Høiby, she later blacked out, only to be told by police that video evidence existed of him assaulting her while she was unconscious. However, Høiby’s legal team has maintained his innocence regarding the rape charges, describing him as an “innocent boy” and arguing that the social circles involved frequently engaged in voluntary sex and substance use. Høiby has pleaded not guilty to the rape charges but has admitted to some lesser offenses, including drug possession and violating restraining orders.
This trial comes at a catastrophic time for the Norwegian Royals. Not only is the public grappling with the details of Høiby’s “reckless” behavior, but Crown Princess Mette-Marit herself has faced renewed criticism over her past links to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
As the seven-week trial unfolds, the “equality before the law” principle is being put to the ultimate test. Will the son of a future Queen face the full weight of justice, or will his royal ties shield him?
