Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta suddenly resigned, decision taken in view of anger of local people
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Resignation: Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Thursday resigned from his post after nearly eight months. He took charge as the third LG of the Union Territory by taking oath on 18 July 2025. During his tenure, several organizations including Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance organized protests demanding statehood, Sixth Schedule and reservation in local jobs.
Reports also said that Gupta faced the anger of the people during his visit to a local monastery on Wednesday.
Kavinder Gupta’s initial journey
Kavinder Gupta’s public life started with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He joined the Sangh at the age of just 13 and it was from here that his ideological and social activism began. Due to his activism during the Emergency (1975-1977), he had to go to jail for about 13 months. After this he played an active role in organizational politics. Between 1978 and 1979, he worked as the secretary of the Punjab unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and later, from 1993 to 1998, he was also the head of the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and contributed to strengthening the organization.

Strong hold in Jammu politics
In local politics, Kavinder Gupta made his mark from Jammu Municipal Corporation. He was elected Mayor of Jammu for three consecutive terms between 2005 and 2010, which shows his popularity and organizational hold.
After this, in the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, he contested from Gandhinagar seat of Jammu as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. He won this election by defeating sitting Congress MLA Raman Bhalla. After reaching the Assembly, on March 19, 2015, he was elected Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where he was responsible for conducting the proceedings of the House.
