A bun rieu (crab noodle soup) eatery on Hang Luoc Street in Hanoi has been shut down temporarily after a Chinese tourist criticized its poor hygiene in a widely shared social media post.

On March 3 a man surnamed Wang shared his experience at the restaurant on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, describing its conditions as “unhygienic” and posting photos of a trash-filled serving area and a wet floor.

“For those who value cleanliness, eating in Vietnam can be a real challenge,” he wrote.

The post quickly drew the attention of Chinese netizens, who expressed concern over the state of the restaurant.

One said they had eaten bun cha (rice vermicelli with grilled pork) in Hanoi and was surprised to see ingredients placed openly on tables without being covered.

Wang’s post made its way into Vietnamese social media, sparking a debate.

Some said food hygiene remains a concern at street food stalls in Hanoi.

On the evening of March 5 an official from the Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee said a team had inspected the restaurant and found several safety violations, including uncovered food, insects flying in the food preparation area and staff handling food without gloves or masks.

The inspectors fined the restaurant VND4.5 million (US$180).

The restaurant owner has pledged to comply with regulations and reopen only after fully meeting food safety standards.

The restaurant has long been popular and is frequently recommended by food review channels.

A bowl of good luck costs VND60,000-75,000, and the restaurant is typically crowded during lunchtime.
