Delhi Assembly rejects Arvind Kejriwal’s demand for live streaming, Privileges Committee proceedings decided
The Delhi Assembly has rejected former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s demand for live streaming of the Privileges Committee proceedings through a letter. The Privilege Committee has summoned the AAP chief on Friday in the matter related to the ‘hanging house’. In the letter, the committee chairman has expressed surprise at Kejriwal’s demand for live streaming. Kejriwal has been a member of the Assembly for more than 10 years and has attended several meetings of the Privileges Committee. Assembly proceedings will now be held behind closed doors at scheduled times, and committee meetings will not be publicly telecast.
Privileges Committee proceedings confidential
The Delhi Assembly Secretariat has clarified that the proceedings of the Privileges Committee are confidential and its live telecast is not allowed as per the rules. The letter stated that there is no prior precedent of live telecast of the Privileges Committee meeting in Parliament or other states. This letter was made public on Friday.
expressed surprise at ignorance
The letter said the committee chairman expressed surprise at Kejriwal’s ignorance, as he has been a member of the Assembly for more than 10 years and during this period, many meetings of the Privileges Committee were held, but no meeting was ever telecast or live streamed. On Tuesday, Kejriwal wrote a letter to the committee saying that he will appear before the committee on March 6 in the ‘hanging house’ case and is seeking permission for live telecast of the proceedings. The Secretariat has rejected this demand on the basis of tradition and rules.
What is AAP’s claim?
In this case, the AAP government claims that a secret gallows existed in this building during the British rule. At the same time, BJP says that this place was only a tiffin room and there is no history related to secret hanging. The Privileges Committee is reviewing statements and evidence from all parties on this controversial topic, to clarify the purpose for which this historic site was used.
