Many mysteries of astronomy surprise us. One of these mysteries is the Zodiac Light, which is also called ‘pseudo morning’ (that is, it looks like morning, but it is not actually morning). This faint glow, visible in the west after sunset or in the east before sunrise, is caused by the reflection of sunlight from the fine dust of the solar system.
This scene is so mesmerizing that people often mistake it for an actual sunrise, while it tells a beautiful story of cosmic dust. A mysterious, faintly glowing pyramid-like light is sometimes seen in the dark night sky, stretching in the east before sunrise or in the west after sunset.
This light is so light and spread that people consider it to be the beginning of sunrise. Zodiacal light is produced by the reflection and scattering of sunlight from very fine dust particles (interplanetary dust) present in the Solar System. These dust particles emerge from the collisions of comets and asteroids and remain spread in the solar system. This light appears brighter near the sun and gradually diminishes, forming a cone or triangle-like shape.
It is best seen around spring and autumn, when it is more oblique to the horizon. Spring appears as a “false dawn” in the Northern Hemisphere. It appears clearer and brighter to people living near the equator because there is less light pollution and better visibility.
According to the US space agency NASA, this light is different from other glows in the night sky such as auroras, noctilucent clouds or the Milky Way. In a recent study, scientists of NASA’s Juno Mission found that a major source of this dust could be the dust storms of Mars. The Juno spacecraft recorded collisions of dust particles, which showed that dust from Mars could spread across the solar system and cause this glow.
