Punjab-Haryana High Court acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim in Chhatrapati murder case, life imprisonment of three convicts remained intact.
Tezzbuzz Desk- The Punjab-Haryana High Court has acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim of the charges framed in the 2002 Chhatrapati murder case due to lack of evidence. The High Court gave the benefit of doubt to Ram Rahim by partially modifying the decision of the special CBI court.
However, the life imprisonment of the other three convicts in the case, Kuldeep, Nirmal and Kishan Lal, has been retained. The decision came after hearing the appeals filed by the accused against the CBI court.
After a detailed study of the evidence and arguments related to the case, the High Court found that there was not enough evidence against Gurmeet Ram Rahim. On this basis the court acquitted him and gave him the benefit of doubt.
Ram Rahim was earlier sentenced to life imprisonment in this case in 2019. However, due to other matters, he is currently lodged in Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail. He is also serving a 20-year sentence in the rape case of two nuns. From time to time he has been allowed to come out on parole.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim had filed an appeal against the 2019 decision. Punjab-Haryana High Court today accepted the appeal and acquitted him, which has given a big legal relief to Ram Rahim in this case.
This decision made it clear that the accused could get the benefit of doubt due to lack of evidence, while the sentence of other convicts was not affected by this decision.
