Dubai: Several explosions occurred in Iran’s capital Tehran early on Saturday, due to which clouds of black smoke were seen rising into the sky. In response, Iran fired missiles towards Israel. Meanwhile, the US warned that a large-scale bombing campaign could soon be launched, in what officials are calling the most intense attack so far in the weeks-long conflict. There are no signs of the fighting in the area ending.

US President Donald Trump’s administration approved the sale of new arms worth $151 million to Israel. Trump said there would be no talks with Iran until it “unconditionally surrenders.”

At the same time, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said that the country will take “every necessary step” to protect itself. Video footage showed plumes of smoke from the explosions over western Tehran, while Israel said it had launched a new round of widespread attacks. The Israeli army said it was trying to stop new missiles fired from Iran. Sirens sound in Bahrain on Saturday morning after Iran attacks.

Saudi Arabia said it destroyed drones heading for its vast Shaybah oil field and shot down a ballistic missile fired toward Prince Sultan Air Base. Meanwhile, according to American intelligence officials, Russia has given Iran such information that allows it to target American warships, aircraft and other military bases in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over phone and expressed condolences on the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi warned that the war could cause serious damage to the global economy and that oil prices could reach $150 a barrel if energy supplies from the Gulf region are disrupted. On Friday, the price of US crude oil rose above $90 per barrel for the first time in two years. At least 1,230 people have died in Iran so far in this conflict, while more than 200 people have died in Lebanon and about 12 in Israel. Six American soldiers have also lost their lives in this conflict.

Iran’s president wrote on social media that “some countries” have begun mediation efforts, but did not elaborate.
