Defense Ministry signs contract with HAL to buy 6 military helicopters
While ALH Mk-II helicopters are being procured for the Indian Coast Guard, Shtil missiles will be deployed on Indian Navy warships.
“A contract worth Rs 2,901 crore has been signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for operational role equipment with ALH Mk-III (Maritime role), an engineering support package and performance-based logistics support,” the ministry said.
It said these twin-engine helicopters have state-of-the-art features superior to existing airborne platforms and are capable of performing a variety of maritime security missions from ashore airfields as well as from ships at sea.
“This induction will significantly enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s capability to perform tasks related to protection of artificial islands, offshore installations and fishermen and the marine environment,” the ministry said.
A contract worth Rs 2,182 crore has been signed with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch – Shtil missile and its associated missile holding frame.
The ministry said that the purpose of this purchase is to significantly increase the air defense capabilities of frontline warships against various types of air threats.
“This system will strengthen the layered air defense architecture on Indian Navy platforms by providing faster response, all-weather combat capability and better survivability in difficult maritime environments,” it said.
“This contract further reflects the long-standing and time-tested defense partnership between India and Russia, which is based on mutual trust and strategic alignment,” it said in a statement.
