This information has been given in a report of Naukri.com released on Saturday.
The report titled What Women Professionals Want is based on a survey conducted among 50,000 women from more than 50 industries in the country. According to the report, 67 percent of the respondents said that there is pay equality at their workplaces, while 33 percent believed that there is no equality. Real estate professionals at 42 per cent were most strongly vocal about pay disparity, followed by FMCG at 38 per cent, pharmaceutical and life sciences at 38 per cent and auto at 37 per cent. Women in retail 35 percent, hotel and restaurant 35 percent, IT services 34 percent, telecom 34 percent, medical services 33 percent and oil and gas sector 33 percent also believed that inequality or gap exists in pay.
The report, released on the eve of International Women’s Day, also highlights the growing demand for equal pay audit and menstrual leave. Discrimination in recruitment and promotion is a big challenge. This demand was seen most among the professionals in the higher salary category. According to the report, the demand for equal pay audit and menstrual leave has increased from 19 percent last year to 27 percent. Among higher-paid women, this demand was 48 percent, indicating that the closer women get to leadership, the greater the gap they see. The survey also revealed that almost 50 percent of women did not share their personal plans like marriage or motherhood due to fear of discrimination.
According to the report, one out of every two women hesitates to share their marriage or motherhood plans during 50 percent of the interviews, in which 34 percent of the women cited fear of discrimination as the main reason for this. This hesitation becomes deeper as experience increases. This rate is 29 percent among newcomers, which increases to 40 percent among women with 10–15 years of experience. About 42 percent women believed that discrimination in recruitment and promotion is their biggest challenge at the workplace. This sentiment has increased by seven basis points compared to last year. The same trend has been seen in metros like Chennai 44 percent and Delhi/NCR 43 percent.
Amid these challenges, 83 percent of women felt encouraged to take up leadership roles, whereas last year this figure was 66 percent. The desire for leadership was seen to be particularly strong among women in South Indian cities. Sumeet Singh, Group CMO, Info Edge India, said the fact that 83 percent women feel encouraged to take up leadership is encouraging. However, it is a matter of concern that one in two women still has to hide their personal plans in interviews. This shows that there is still a lot of work to be done.
