TMC will support the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP and Congress issued whip.

New Delhi. Now Congress also seems to be getting the support of Mamata Banerjee in the No-Confidence Motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. It is reported that TMC will now vote in support of this no-confidence motion. Earlier, TMC MPs had not signed the notice of this no-confidence motion. Initially TMC had said that instead of directly bringing the No-Confidence Motion, the Speaker should first be given three days’ time by writing a letter, but now keeping in mind the opposition unity, TMC has decided to vote in support of the motion.

In fact, in the last week of the first phase of the budget session, the opposition parties led by Congress had given notice of the proposal to remove Speaker Om Birla from the post. The second phase of the budget session of Parliament will begin from March 9 and the proposal is likely to be discussed on the same day.

What did Congress say on the no-confidence motion?

Earlier on Friday, Congress said that the proposal brought to remove the Lok Sabha Speaker is in accordance with parliamentary rules and traditions and it should be discussed in the House. The opposition has alleged in its motion that Speaker Om Birla has ‘openly discriminated’ in the functioning of the House and has given decisions in favor of the ruling party in many cases. Many serious allegations have been made against the Speaker in the motion brought by the opposition. It said that he did not allow many MPs, including opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, to speak.

Apart from this, it has also been accused of suspending eight opposition MPs, allegedly making ‘unfair allegations’ against women MPs and not taking action on objectionable comments against former prime ministers by some ruling party MPs. According to parliamentary rules, the Speaker can be present in the House during the discussion on this motion, but he will not sit on the Speaker’s chair. He will also get an opportunity to clarify the allegations against him.

What does numerical strength say?

However, considering the current numerical strength, the chances of this no-confidence motion being passed are considered very low. In the current strength of 541 members in the Lok Sabha, the ruling NDA has 293 MPs, due to which the failure of the proposal is considered almost certain. Despite this, this voting is being considered as a test of the unity of the opposition. Due to initial lack of support from some opposition parties, the ruling party was hopeful that the Speaker might get support from outside the opposition as well.

BJP and Congress issued whip

In view of the possible voting on this issue, both BJP and Congress have issued whips to their respective MPs. BJP has directed for mandatory presence of MPs for the first two days, while Congress has asked to ensure presence of its MPs for three days. According to political analysts, this proposal may be defeated, but through this debate the conflict between the ruling party and the opposition inside the Parliament may become more intense. Even before the beginning of the second phase of the budget session, this issue has heated up the politics of Parliament.
