Mumbai: Well-known artist of Indian rap scene Santi Sharma is once again in the news. He made a controversial comment on TV actress and social media influencer Khushi Mukherjee’s recent bold outfit which took the internet by storm. Sharing Khushi’s video, Santi wrote, “Rape cases increase in India because of such girls. There are children on social media too, so the content should be appropriate for the society.”
After this statement, users trolled her fiercely, many people termed it as victim-blaming and an attack on women’s freedom. Santi Sharma is an independent rapper, singer and songwriter. He gained recognition with songs like ‘Suni Suni Sadko’ in 2016 and ‘Udaan’ in 2017. After this, he has released many hit songs like ‘Koshish Meri’, ‘Tribute’, ‘Ek Thi Meri Girlfriend’, ‘Killin’, ‘Choco Moko’, ‘Gangsta’, ‘Black Heart’, ‘Bahon Mein’, ‘Ek Din’, ‘Backless Dress’ and ‘Pita Daru’. Santi raps openly on social and cultural issues and is known for his frequent public commentary.
Recently, Santi has opened his own professional music studio in Mumbai, which is the result of his 12 years of hard work. He has also sung in films like ‘Housefull 5’ and has created a strong fan base in the indie hip-hop scene. The controversy started when Khushi Mukherjee was seen in a revealing outfit in Mumbai. In the video, she was seen adjusting her clothes, which was trolled on social media as ‘obscene’. Santi reacted to this video and said that such content has a negative impact on the society, especially the young generation.
He further said that the platforms and responsible persons should ban such content, so that the future of the coming generation is safe. After this comment, two factions were formed on social media. Some users supported Santi and said that influencers should post content responsibly. At the same time, most of them considered it wrong, saying that the reason for rape is not the clothes, but the mentality of the criminal. Many people wrote, “Such statements are justifying rape.”
Khushi Mukherjee has been in the news many times in the past for bold fashion and controversial comments, like her statement on Suryakumar Yadav that led to her facing a Rs 100 crore defamation case. Currently, this controversy is giving rise to a huge debate on women’s fashion freedom, social media responsibility and victim-blaming.
