What is the meaning of this meeting?
According to experts, this meeting is considered very important strategically. A few months ago, a Bloomberg report said that Turkey had proposed forming a triangular defense alliance with nuclear-armed Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which was described as a structure similar to ‘Islamic NATO’. The purpose of this initiative was said to be to prepare a new way for the changing security equations in the Middle East and beyond.
Now when Iran is continuously launching missile and drone attacks, the question is arising whether Pakistan will limit itself to giving statements or will take any further steps. The reason for this is also the 2025 strategic mutual defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
What is the agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia?
This agreement was originally signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in September. According to the report, it has been said that if there is an attack on any one country, it will be considered an attack on all the members. This provision is considered similar to Article 5 of NATO, under which member countries are committed to collective defense.
According to Bloomberg’s report, talks on including Turkey in this system have advanced a lot and there is a possibility of an agreement being reached. The report said that this expansion reflects the growing strategic interests of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in South Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa.
Will Pakistan take any step?
However, the question is also being raised whether Pakistan will actually take any military step. There is definitely talk of collective defense in this agreement, but its main provisions focus on traditional cooperation such as joint military exercises, sharing of intelligence and cooperation related to drone technology. There is no mention of any promise related to nuclear weapons.
What will happen if Pakistan sends army to Saudi Arabia?
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the phone, expressing solidarity and supporting peace efforts, but did not mention any military deployment. Experts say that if Pakistan sends troops, it may find itself trapped in a major war, which may put further pressure on its already weak economy and security situation.
