Khamenei’s son Mojtaba, who was killed in the American-Israeli attack in Iran, was elected supreme leader.

Tehran. Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader and supreme leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution who was killed in a US-Israeli military operation on February 28, was chosen as his successor. Mojtaba will be the leader of the Islamic revolution and the supreme leader of the country. The 88-member Experts Assembly (Majlis-e-Khobrangan-e-Rahri) elected Mojtaba as the country’s supreme leader. The Experts Assembly is also called the most powerful religious expert assembly of Iran.

Tehran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim shared this information this morning. According to the agency’s report, Iran’s Experts Assembly elected Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the new leader of the Islamic Revolution. The assembly said Mojtaba’s father, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, led Iran for 37 years after the death of Imam Khomeini in 1989. After his martyrdom, the assembly elected Mojtaba Khamenei as his successor.

The assembly expressed grief over the martyrdom of Imam Khamenei and others in the February 28 attack with the announcement in a statement issued late Sunday. Condemned the US-Israel attack on Iran. The statement said that immediately after the martyrdom of Imam Khamenei and despite the circumstances of war and direct threats from the enemies, the assembly wasted no time in fulfilling its constitutional responsibility and began the process of electing a new leader. The assembly on Sunday overwhelmingly elected Mojtaba Khamenei as the third leader of the Islamic Revolution.

According to the report of Iran International newspaper, Iran’s state TV informed on Monday morning that Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as his father’s successor. This decision has been taken at a time when the war that started after the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has now reached a dramatic turn. Mojtaba Khamenei was considered a possible contender for this post for a long time. It is noteworthy that Mojtaba had never contested elections for any government post before nor was he appointed to any post.

State TV read out a statement in its broadcast saying Mojtaba had been elected on the basis of strong support. An appeal was made to the countrymen to unite behind him. Scenes of people celebrating in public places of Tehran were also shown. This transfer of power to the post of supreme leader is considered important since the Islamic Revolution that took place almost half a century ago. Mojtaba will now also be the supreme commander of the army and the powerful paramilitary organization Revolutionary Guard.

Mojtaba Khamenei will have to face opposition from America. US President Donald Trump has said that Khamenei’s son is not acceptable to him. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has issued a statement announcing its support for Mojtaba Khamenei. Iran-backed Lebanese organization Hezbollah shared his photo on Telegram, calling him the leader of the Islamic revolution.

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his election as the new supreme leader. He said that this appointment has ushered in a new era of strength and respect for the country. Pejeshkian said that this election will strengthen the unity of the country and help Iran face the conspiracies of its enemies.
