TMC preparing to bring impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament, made serious allegations of working for BJP
New Delhi: Amidst the growing confrontation with the Election Commission over SIR (possibly related to voter list) in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now decided to take a big step. The party has started preparations to bring an impeachment motion in Parliament against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. TMC alleges that the CEC is working at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and democratic institutions are being misused.
According to TMC sources, there is a plan to present this proposal in the House in the second part of the budget session itself. A draft is being prepared for this and soon the process of collecting signatures of more than the required number of MPs will be started. However, the party has not yet decided whether this proposal will be presented in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.
Strategy to defeat the opposition
Interestingly, TMC wanted to take this step in the first phase of the budget session itself, but at that time Congress’s priority was to bring a no-confidence motion against the Speaker. For this reason, a consensus could not be reached between the two parties and TMC refused to sign the resolution brought against the Speaker.
But now the equations have changed. TMC has decided to support the opposition on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker. In turn, sources say the opposition has also verbally agreed to the impeachment motion to remove Gyanesh Kumar. On the basis of this consensus, TMC is now moving forward with full confidence.
Mamata Banerjee is a constant attacker
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has been attacking the Election Commission and especially CEC Gyanesh Kumar since the beginning regarding the announcement of SIR. He has alleged on several occasions that the Election Commission is being misused by the BJP.
“BJP is systematically misusing every democratic institution and constitutional position to fulfill its anti-people ambitions.”- Mamata Banerjee
After the release of the final list of SIR, Mamata had said that names are being arbitrarily removed from the voter list, which is part of a bigger conspiracy.
CEC protest in Kolkata
This political conflict intensified when Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reached Kolkata on Sunday to review the preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. When he reached Kolkata for his three-day visit, he faced opposition from some people. The protesters showed him black flags and raised slogans against him. This incident shows that the tension between the Election Commission and the ruling party in Bengal is at its peak.
