Renault Will Launch Mini-Duster With EV, Hybrid Features

Renault is preparing a major expansion of its SUV portfolio in India with the development of a new compact SUV popularly referred to as the “mini Duster.” The model is expected to launch around 2027 and will target the highly competitive sub-4-metre SUV segment.

The vehicle will sit below the full-size Duster in Renault’s lineup and is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its presence in India’s booming SUV market. Automakers are increasingly focusing on compact SUVs because they account for a large share of passenger vehicle sales in the country.

Designed with a Rugged Duster-Like Identity

The upcoming compact SUV is expected to borrow design cues from the iconic Duster, known for its rugged and upright stance. Compared with Renault’s existing compact SUV, the Kiger, the new model is likely to have a more boxy and traditional SUV designwhich many Indian buyers prefer.

This design direction could help Renault attract buyers looking for a tough-looking compact SUV rather than a crossover-style vehicle.

Multiple Powertrain Options Planned

One of the biggest highlights of the mini Duster is its wide range of powertrain options. Reports suggest that Renault is considering petrol, hybrid, and electric variants for the model.

The SUV may feature a new 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol enginealong with a turbocharged version. In addition, the electric variant could be offered with two battery pack options — around 35kWh and 55kWh.

Such a diverse lineup would make the mini Duster one of the most versatile offerings in the compact SUV category.

Expected Price and Market Position

The upcoming SUV is expected to be priced between ₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom)depending on the variant and powertrain configuration.

This pricing strategy would place it directly against popular compact SUVs from brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra. Renault is also likely to localize production heavily to keep costs competitive.

Part of Renault’s Long-Term India Plan

The mini Duster is part of Renault’s broader plan to introduce several new models in India over the next few years. The company is expected to first launch the next-generation Duster and a three-row SUV derivativefollowed by the smaller compact SUV around 2027–2028.

With hybrid and electric options planned, the upcoming mini Duster could play a key role in Renault’s future strategy as the Indian car market gradually shifts toward electrification and cleaner mobility.
