In fact, during the final match in Ahmedabad, in the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings, Arshdeep fielded the ball and threw it rapidly towards batsman Daryl Mitchell and the ball hit his pad. Daryl Mitchell looked very angry on this, but Indian captain Surya Kumar Yadav and the onfield umpire pacified the matter. At the end of the over, Mitchell and Arshdeep were seen shaking hands. India won its record third T20 World Cup title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final.
According to the ICC, Arshdeep was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing the ball (or any other cricket object) in an unfair and/or dangerous manner at or near a player during an international match”. There was no need for a formal hearing as the Indian bowler accepted the punishment of Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
According to ICC rules, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum of an official reprimand, a maximum of a fine of 50 per cent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points. When a player reaches four or more demerit points in a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and the player is banned.
