BJP’s new bet on the states created by Atal, preparations for the upcoming assembly elections intensified

  • Three new states are becoming the basis of election strategy
  • Attempt to convert Atal’s legacy into political capital

New Delhi/Dehradun. In view of the assembly elections to be held in the coming years, the Bharatiya Janata Party is bringing the three states formed in the year 2000, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, at the center of its political strategy. The party is preparing a new election narrative on the issues of development, cultural identity and good governance by linking these states with the legacy of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

BJP believes that the formation of these three states was not a mere administrative change, but was the result of regional aspirations and long people’s struggles. The party is now presenting the same historical decision as its ideological and political capital. The central leadership assesses that if development plans and organizational expansion are carried forward effectively, the BJP may make strong political gains in these states in the coming elections.

Recently, during a program in Uttarakhand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that when Atal Bihari Vajpayee had taken the decision to form these three states, the opposition had raised questions on its practicality. But with time these states have made significant progress towards development. BJP claims that its governments have given priority to the balance of development and cultural values and this model will become the basis of the country’s development in future also.

In fact, keeping in view the elections to be held in these states in the coming years, the party has already started political preparations. Assembly elections are proposed in Uttarakhand in the year 2027, while in Chhattisgarh elections are to be held in 2028 and in Jharkhand in 2029. The BJP organization is working on the strategy of expanding to the booth level in these three states, reaching out to new social groups and making development projects the main issue. The background of creation of these states is also becoming an important part of BJP’s election discourse.

The state of Uttarakhand came into existence after a long hill movement. The Rampur Tiraha incident of 1994 became a turning point in this movement and ultimately the state was formed on 9 November 2000. Similarly, Jharkhand’s demand for decades was related to tribal identity, local rights over mineral resources and regional development. After becoming a separate state on 15 November 2000, this region became one of the major mineral and industrial centers of the country.

Chhattisgarh also became a new state by separating from Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000 due to the demand for separate cultural identity and administrative facilities. BJP is also looking at connecting these three states with the broader goal of developed India. The party argues that Uttarakhand has the potential to become a global center of religious and spiritual tourism. Chhattisgarh is an economically important region due to its mineral wealth and agricultural production, while Jharkhand holds strategic importance in terms of industrial development and natural resources.

Political analysts believe that BJP is making a strategy to carry development projects and cultural identity together in these states. Chardham project, connectivity and tourism development are being projected as major achievements in Uttarakhand. Whereas in Chhattisgarh, expansion of organization in tribal and rural areas and better utilization of resources is being made an election issue.

A strategy to give priority to industrial investment and employment creation is emerging in Jharkhand. Amidst all this, the central leadership of BJP is trying to give the message that the political seed sown by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the year 2000 is now moving forward as a strong model of development and governance. The elections to be held in the coming years will also be a test of how effective this narrative of Atal’s legacy and development proves to be among the public in these states.
