‘What is your faith, should you go to temple or Gurudwara…’, after Ishaan, Harbhajan Singh gave a strong reply to Kirti Azad.
Harbhajan Singh replied to Kirti Azad: Team India registered a historic victory by defeating New Zealand in the final of T20 World Cup 2026 and won the title. After this big victory, Indian team captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir and ICC Chairman Jay Shah reached Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad. However, a debate broke out on social media regarding the players going to the temple. TMC MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad objected to this, after which former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh gave his reaction on the matter.
Debate started on going to temple
After the Indian team won the T20 World Cup, pictures and videos of captain Suryakumar Yadav, coach Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah visiting the temple went viral on social media. After this, different reactions started emerging on this issue. TMC MP and former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad raised questions on this and called it wrong. He said that players should stay away from such things and should not connect sports with religion.
Harbhajan Singh replied
After Kirti Azad’s statement, former Indian off-spinner and Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh expressed his opinion on this issue. He said that it is not right to question the faith of the players and sports and politics should be kept separate. Harbhajan Singh said, ‘Don’t listen to his words. Look, keep sports and politics separate. Whatever your faith, go to temple, gurudwara or go anywhere. Even if he has gone somewhere, it is his wish.”
Harbhajan Singh further said that Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir have every right to go anywhere according to their faith. He said that if someone has made a wish, then going to the temple or any religious place to fulfill it is a completely personal decision. The former Indian spinner also said that it is not right to question the personal decisions of players every time and such comments should be avoided.
What did Kirti Azad say?
TMC MP Kirti Azad had said that players always play for their team and country, not for any religion. He said that India is a secular country, where people of many religions live and everyone together becomes a part of the team. Giving an example, he said that even when India won the World Cup in 1983, there were players of different religions in the team. In such a situation, it should not be considered right to link sports with any religion.

Objection expressed on taking the trophy to the temple
Kirti Azad also said that if a tradition like taking the trophy to the temple is started then it may send a wrong message. He raised the question and said that if this happens then what difference will there be between India and Pakistan. He also said that he himself is a Hindu and during his career used to visit the temple many times before or after the matches, but he never linked the game with religion. According to him, sports and art have no religion and players should play only for their country.
